Singing in both English and Arabic, her vocals reflect a rich soundscape and invite listeners to engage not just with the music, but with the political message behind it.
The collective experience of the performance broke down barriers and created a space for solidarity. When we see art only as an instrument for activism, we overlook its transformative power on the audiences. Activism often evokes images of struggle and confrontation — both of which are certainly relevant— Jamila & The Other Heroes reminded me once again that resistance can also be joyful.
It’s rare, at least in Germany, to hear Palestinian narratives presented so boldly, especially in a context that celebrates rather than victimizes. And that’s part of what made the show so powerful: they didn’t come to beg for sympathy; they came to proclaim the existence and resilience of the Palestinian people.
Watching the band on stage, the message was clear: we’re still here, we’re still singing, and we’re still fighting.
One of the things that stayed with me after the show was the sense of community that formed in that room. I’ve been to concerts where the band plays, the crowd applauds, and then everyone leaves. But this was different. Jamila & The Other Heroes didn’t just perform — it was not a one-way conversation. It was simply powerful to experience their presence on the stage together with music lovers and those who just happened to stumble onto the venue that day.“

[The Band] opened their ‘Border Syndrome’ tour by playing the prestigious Cairo Jazz Club on November 11 before taking on dates in Alexandria Jesuit Centre, Nouweiba and Dahab.
‘The Cairo Jazz Club Gig was pure ecstasy!’ says Jamila Al-Yousef, the band’s Palestinian-German lead singer. ‘The club was on fire with people dancing, shouting, and heating up with us. It was incredible especially considering that most people didn‘t know our music before.’
